Welcome to inside my brain!
I am an artist working in a range of mediums, and I enjoy the problem-solving aspect of art creation as much as the creative process. Each medium requires a different approach and thought process. Photography brain differs greatly to painting brain – and printmaking brain is a whole different kettle of fish!
I enjoy exploring different mediums, different topics and different processes. I don’t want to spend my life painting the one thing on repeat until I can do it in my sleep. This means each collection is different to the last, and my body of work doesn’t tell one cohesive story. But I don’t want to reach the end of my life and regret not exploring the creative world as much as I could. I do however, have find that I have a few themes and topics that over the years, I keep coming back to (*cough cough* like my slight obsession with eggs.)
The urge to create has been with me as long as I remember – and no matter what other studies and paths have been taken, the trail always ends up circling back to art. I am passionate about creating artwork – it is much like breathing to me. And much like breathing, if I don’t do it, it really throws a spanner into my day.I seem to be in an continual existential crisis these days, one that comes from the realisation that ‘its always later than we think,’ and this greatly influences my artworks along with my interests in reoccurring subjects including annual rights, the environment and interrogation of traditional notions of beauty. Additionally my artwork contents an introspective exploration of my own cognitive and emotional processes – initially diagnoses a ‘harmless eccentric’ in my 20’s, in my 40’s that diagnosis has been upgraded to autistic. So it’s finally time to dig deep into my brain to see what I can find!
While I strongly believe in art as a form of activism, my work remains personal, grounded and sometimes whimsical as I explore my place in the world. Metaphors and playfulness are often used to convey a deeper meaning for those who want to extract it. I make the art that I want to see in the world, sometimes to delve into serious issues that are important to me – but delivered in a way that sneaks past defences by using a pun or a laugh.
My work has been regularly exhibited in Melbourne, country Victoria and South Australia since I studied visual arts at Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE in the early 2000s.
