‘Portrait of Amygdala’ by Katie Theodorus

‘Portrait of Amygdala’
Katie Theodorus
2024, acrylic paint, reclaimed cord, locally-made wool yarn on masonite board
W; 36

My whole life, anxiety has been an ever-present force. Because of it, I’ve missed out on opportunities and experiences, and lost friends. As I’ve learned more about the stimuli and chemical processes that cause anxiety in my brain and body, I’ve come to know my amygdala much more intimately. I decided to become friends with it, talk soothingly to it when it tells me to panic, and now, painted a portrait of it. The portrait’s crocheted frame mimics an antique wooden frame, but with a more cosy, comforting feel.

About the artist:
Katie Theodorus works in varied media including paint, soft sculpture, textiles, and found objects. Her practice takes inspiration from sources as varied as nature, history, dreams, internet culture, and her mostly imaginary life as an archivist.

Her painted works are a portal into the depths of her subconscious — simultaneously unsophisticated and layered with depths of meaning, with an edge of wry humour. Many of her works act as medicine, reconciling her experiences as large-bodied, neurodiverse, mentally ill and chronically ill.

In recent years, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome has added a new level of wonkiness to her drawings, which she’s decided adds a certain charm.
